The Coming Month(s)

Well, that lasted a hot second.

Remember how in my last (coincidentally, also my first) blog post over two months ago, I said, "this is my anti-day job"? Well, it turns out the blog that I hoped would serve as a daily source of ventilation from said job was supplanted by the actual thing I expected I'd be writing about, my music. Not such a bad thing when I think about it, and yet, I'd like to get some mileage out of this vehicle for my ramblings. I'm also referring to the fact that as of December the tenth, I'll be leaving that job. This is because, in January, I'll be starting full-time (or as much as they'll let me do) at UCLA's Extension program in Film Scoring. It'll be one calendar year of 48 credits, or 12 courses at 4 credits each. During that time, I expect I'll pick up a few fancy tricks. Or not! Who's to say. Anyways...

You, probably: "Yay! Hoorah! Congratulations!"

Me: Stop it, they didn't even ask for my undergrad transcript.

You: But Sam, if you're leaving your job in early December, and you're starting classes in January, what'll you be doing in that whole month of free time? Me: Funny you should mention that, because I have no idea!

Aside from the week or so I'll be spending with one very lucky young woman and her family for the holidays, I've got zero plans for that time. So.

What I'd like to do with this probably-last-ever-this-lifetime opportunity is lay the groundwork for some kind of major musical project. I've started such projects in the past (a symphony designed around fractal geometry, a guitar heavy full-length prog concept album about a bear, several different sci-fi themed operas, among other similarly farfetched ideas) but I've never been able to truly devote time to them. And while I have been writing and playing music, it's mostly been 4-6 minutes of MIDI-heavy work for the ol' SoundCloud page. And while there's nothing wrong with that, I'd like to do something with a bit more weight. More to come on this. Hopefully. Let's talk again soon(er).
